America has become a major player when it comes to diversity. Currently, we see diversity all around us; in people, ideas and even philosophies. However, when referring to the school systems, teachers and students, it is essential to understand that differences will certainly arise. In such a traditional country, often the question of what curriculum or philosophy should be implemented appears. At this point, the reader can observed educators focusing on an essentialist curriculum, while others are focusing on the idea of social reconstruction. First, it is fundamental to understand what are these two philosophies, and their purposes. Then, the question is what should the educator do? Which one should be applied? To begin with, in the philosophical perspective on education, the instructors focus on the nature of knowledge and how we acquired this knowledge through the educational approaches currently applied all over the world (Cohen, 1999). In which two out of the four major philosophies include essentialism and reconstructionism. In the first place, essentialism was an idea that developed during the 1920s and 1930s by William Bagley. He stresses the basic idea that there is common knowledge that needs to be transmitted to learners in a disciplinary and systematic way (Cohen, 1999).
